Periodontology

The inflammatory disease of the periodontium (periodontitis) leads to tooth loss if left untreated. It can occur at any age on one or more teeth at the same time and in varying degrees of severity. It is caused by bacteria that accumulate between the tooth and gum and usually multiply due to poor oral hygiene. As a result, the gums recede, allowing the bacteria to penetrate deep into the gums. This severely attacks the periodontium. As a result, the bone is broken down by the inflammation, the teeth become loose and are ultimately lost. In order to reconstruct a natural smile, a number of complex treatment steps must be carried out. This includes bone augmentation (sinus lift) in order to subsequently insert implants that fit perfectly. In the field of periodontology, periodontitis is treated effectively and prevented in the long term through education.

Preventing periodontitis

Periodontitis can be successfully treated using modern treatment methods. The basic therapy is regular cleaning of the teeth with removal of the bacteria. As soon as the periodontium has been affected, periodontitis can no longer be cured by tooth cleaning alone. Additional measures such as bone augmentation and tooth replacement usually have to be carried out. You can prevent periodontitis through conscientious oral hygiene. This includes brushing your teeth regularly and cleaning the spaces between your teeth with dental floss. If you are particularly susceptible to gum disease, professional dental cleanings at the dentist two or more times a year are recommended.

With the help of modern and established surgical techniques, we at MKG Hamm are also able to:

  • new bone volume can be created(autologous bone or bone replacement materials) and lost tooth-supporting tissue can be rebuilt.
  • tissue regeneration (GTR – Guided Tissue Regeneration) can be performed for larger defects.
  • promoting the reconstruction of the natural periodontium (root cementum, fiber bundles, bone) with narrow matrix proteins.
  • aesthetic periodontal surgery can be used to correct changes in the course of the gums
  • after gum recession, exposed tooth necks can be covered by transplanting soft tissue (connective tissue grafts/free mucosa grafts).
  • excess gum, which partially covers the crown of the tooth and thus makes it look too short, can be removed gently and painlessly.
